生命現象の現場を分子レベルで直接見る

近年の分子生物学と構造生物学の進歩は著しく、CG を駆使した美麗なイラストや動画を目にする機会も増えました。しかし、「生命とは何か?」には、まだ答えられません。私たちは、想像図ではなく、生きた細胞の中で生命現象の現場を分子レベルで直接見ることで「生命とは何か?」を理解したいと考え、そのための技術開発とそれを利用した計測に並行して取り組んでいます。具体的な研究対象としては、キネシンなどの分子モーターによる細胞内輸送を中心に、シグナル伝達分子の核輸送から遺伝子発現調節まで、細胞の中での輸送・動きを一分子レベルで直接イメージングすることで解析しています。

たとえば、分子モーターによる細胞内の物質輸送は、文字通り細胞の生命線で、速く正確に届けることが出来なくなることで様々な疾病を引き起こすことが知られています。しかし、細胞の中で分子モーターが迷うことなく目的地へと荷物を届ける「細胞内のカーナビ」については全く判っていません。我々は、最先端のイメージング技術で「細胞内の宅配便」を直接観察することで、この問題に取り組んでいます。
