身体臓器の一つである脳神経が、人間社会をつくる知的な精神を進化創発させた生物科学的な仕組みの解明を目指します。方法として分子神経遺伝学的手法から脳機能イメージングに亙る先端技術データの複雑系数理解析などを駆使し、学究理念として物質から精神が進化創発する基本原理を追究することを通じて、社会貢献として人間の健全な精神の涵養に資するその発達･加齢過程の定量評価技術の開発･実装を志します。具体的には、道具やビデオなどを使うように訓練したサルの行動学的および神経生理学的解析を軸として、ヒトの知的認知機能の進化的基盤を構成すると考えられる、身体の構造や運動に立脚した象徴概念形成/推論/言語/自己意識などの萌芽の認知神経生物学的解析を行います。そして、霊長類進化の過程でヒト脳がこれらの能力を獲得するに至った生物科学的メカニズムを、心−身相関の観点から脳神経と全身臓器との機能的関連性を再吟味するとともに、野生環境下のサルの道具を使った採餌行為を通した脳−腸連関による脳神経発達の修飾作用を検討することによって、精神と身体と環境との生涯に亙る機能連関の動的機構を理解し、その社会発達過程の定量化法を開発します。
