RIKEN BDR’s Dr. Kozue Murata, research scientist in the Clinical Translational Research Program, was awarded the Public Trust Cardiovascular Research Fund–Uchida Prize for fiscal year 2024. An award ceremony celebrating the awardees was held at The Industry Club of Japan on Saturday, February 15, 2025.The Public Trust Cardiovascular Research Fund was established to discover and foster talented young researchers engaged in cardiology-related research, a field which has lagged behind Europe and American countries since the Meiji Era, by supporting and recognizing their research excellence. This Public Trust provides research grants to young medical researchers as well as awards the Uchida Prize to recognize individuals who have made outstanding research achievements to advance the field of cardiology.

“It is a great honor to receive the prestigious Uchida Prize. The mission of the RIKEN BDR Clinical Translational Research Program (iPS cell-based Cardiovascular Research) to which I belong to is to translate the results from basic research to clinical applications. This Prize recognized the research that transpired from our strong desire to find a way to use our technology to benefit society in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in 2020. While our research is only midway, I think we have demonstrated a possible model for persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection. This Prize has inspired me to continue to do my utmost to pave the future of cardiac regenerative medicine,” commented Dr. Murata, on being named winner of the Uchida Prize.
