About UsBDR's Vision: Unraveling the Life Cycle
The process of birth, growth, and eventual aging in living organisms can be viewed as a continuous sequence of events known as the life cycle. At the Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR), we use the wide range of expertise of our researchers assembled from diverse research fields to investigate the dynamically changing biological processes of life across multiple scales, from molecules and cells to the whole organism to unveil a comprehensive picture of the life cycle. We also aim to develop technologies that can predict and control the changes in the state and function of the cells and organs driving life cycle progression.
By advancing these studies, we aspire to uncover new ways to maintain health throughout the organismal lifespan and contribute to finding solutions to issues associated with an aging society with declining birthrates.
With RIKEN’s broad diversity of research and world-class research infrastructure, we employ an integrative approach to address unresolved issues, including technology and techniques related to stem cells and germ cells, organoids (mini-organs) and diverse animal models, advanced imaging and quantification technologies, mathematical modeling, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and multiscale simulations.

Our Mission
Researchers at the BDR strive to clarify the biological events unfolding in the body during all stages of the life cycle including development, growth, aging, and death to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological functions regulating living systems and to develop technologies that can predict and control the course of the life cycle.
