Exhibit at SSH events in Hyogo PrefectureIntroducing hibernation and other research to high school students
Feb. 28, 2024
The RIKEN BDR participated in two events organized by schools in Hyogo Prefecture that are designated as a Super Science High School (SSH) in January and February.

On January 21, BDR participated in the 16th Annual Science Fair in Hyogo held at the campuses of Kobe University, University of Hyogo, and Konan University located on Port Island in Kobe. Genshiro Sunagawa, team leader of the Lab for Hibernation Biology was in attendance to introduce his work on hibernation research to the SSH students in Hyogo Prefecture participating in the event. BDR's science communicators were also onsite to share some of the exciting research carried out at the Center by showing models and samples, such as a three-dimensional structural model of a transcription complex revealed by cryo-electron microscopy, specimens in which tissues were optically cleared, and retinal pigment epithelial cells that were derived from iPS cells. The students were able to see and ask questions about the displays and the research.

A similar exhibit was held at the 3rd Annual Girl's Expo with Science Ethics hosted by Himeji Higashi High School on February 12 at Arcrea Himeji, where participants also had the opportunity to observe some samples related to BDR's research. Additionally, BDR science communicators provided comments and advice to the high school students in their poster presentations.
