Shigeru Kuratani, team leader of the Laboratory for Evolutionary Morphology at RIKEN BDR, has been named as one of the recipients of the Asahi Prize for fiscal year 2023. He was presented with his prize at a ceremony held in Tokyo on January 26.

The Asahi Prize was established in 1929 to honor individuals and groups that have made outstanding achievements in academics and arts and have greatly contributed to the development and progress of Japanese culture and society at large.

Kuratani was recognized for his longstanding and outstanding contributions to understanding vertebrate body formation and related evolutionary processes.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious prize. This would not have been possible without all the support I received from everyone around me. I hope that the field of evolutionary morphology in Japan will continue to flourish and will continue to make every effort to this end.”  –Shigeru Kuratani
