Summary
Being a scientist offers a career with many significant benefits, including being able to pursue important scientific questions and attain the intellectual satisfaction that results from answering such questions and advancing your area of science, and contributing to the training and success of junior colleagues. However, the number of available independent positions for scientists has always fallen far below the number of talented candidates who desire to fill these positions. Thus, being a scientist involves succeeding in a highly competitive environment with many accomplished and well trained competitors. In my talk I will address a strategy for career success and some critical skills that junior scientists can develop to make them "stand out from the pack."
