RIKEN BDR Exhibits at Two International ConferencesIntroducing BDR to the international scientific community

May 8, 2024

The RIKEN BDR organized exhibit booths at two international meetings held in the United States in mid-February.

The first meeting was the Biophysical Society (BPS) 68th Annual Meeting held February 10 to 14, 2024, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was the first time RIKEN BDR has organized a booth for the BPS meeting, one of the largest international conferences for biophysics and related fields. Staff from the BDR Public Relations (PR) Group was onsite at the BPS Meeting to introduce the Center’s activities, current job opportunities and funding programs available for graduate students and young researchers to conduct research at BDR and RIKEN to those who stopped by the booth. The BDR was also one of 15 exhibitors participating in the Exhibitor Passport Competition, an event organized by the BPS to encourage meeting attendees to visit the different booths in the exhibit hall, in which competition participants who went around their rounds to all participating booths could enter a raffle to win a tablet. There were over one hundred meeting participants who stopped by the booth to hear more about research at BDR and find out information about potential job opportunities and what it is like to work in Japan, in addition to trying to complete the Passport Competition.

The RIKEN BDR also took part in the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), which was held February 15 to 17 in Denver, Colorado. The AAAS Meeting is an annual conference where leading scientists, educators, policymakers, and journalists from around the world convene to discuss cutting-edge developments in science, technology, and policy. RIKEN’s International Affairs Division (IAD) regularly organizes a RIKEN booth at the AAAS Meetings to help increase its visibility and promote research conducted at RIKEN. This year, the IAD joined hands with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), several World Premier International (WPI) research centers and members of the Japan Association of Communication for Science and Technology (JACST), including the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), National Institutes for Natural Science (NINS), Research Insitute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), Hokkaido University, Osaka Metropolitan University, The University of Tokyo’s Information Technology Center and Institute of Industrial Science, to arrange a Japan Research Booth for the meeting. The Japan Research Booth was tastefully decorated with cherry blossom planters which helped to draw the attention of meeting attendees to the booth. In addition to promoting programs for young researchers and study opportunities for graduate students, this year’s RIKEN booth highlighted the activities of two life science centers at RIKEN–the BDR and the Center for Integrated Medical Sciences (IMS). RIKEN staff onsite also gave two presentations at the lecture area of the Japan booth to attendees that passed by, and close to two hundred people stopped by to learn about RIKEN and some of the research carried out at RIKEN centers and also hear about the different opportunities available at RIKEN.
